Privacy policy

Last updated: 26 May 2026.

Draft — not legal advice. These pages describe how we intend to operate. They will be reviewed and finalised by external counsel before public launch (spec §12). If you are a user or broker on a pre-launch build and have a question we haven’t answered, email privacy@brokercompare.example.

Who we are

BrokerCompare (“we”, “us”) is a yacht broker matching service. We help boat sellers find the broker most likely to sell their boat well, and we hand off to that broker. We do not value boats ourselves, we do not list boats, and we do not hold any money for buyers, sellers, or brokers.

For data-protection purposes, BrokerCompare is the controller of the personal data you give us through this website. The brokers you choose to be introduced to become independent controllers of the subset of your data we share with them.

What we collect, and why

What you tell us in the funnel

  • Boat basics — make, model, year, length, type, and location (country, city, optional marina). Used to match you with brokers who specialise in your boat.
  • Your name and email — collected at the broker shortlist step so we can send you your matches and so the brokers you select can contact you.
  • Your consents — whether you allowed us to share your details with the brokers you pick, and whether you opted in to occasional product updates.

What we collect automatically

  • Essential session data — a server session cookie if you sign in, your locale preference, and your cookie-consent choice.
  • Product analytics (only with your consent) — page views, funnel step completion, click events. Used in aggregate to find friction in the sign-up flow.
  • Crash + error reports — when the site throws an error, technical details are sent to Sentry so we can fix it. These are not used to profile you.
  • Server access logs — IP address, user-agent, request path. Retained for 30 days for security and abuse monitoring.

Legal basis (GDPR Article 6)

  • Contract — we process your boat details, name, and email so we can perform the broker-matching service you asked us for.
  • Consent — we share your details with brokers you select, set analytics cookies, and send marketing emails only if you opted in. You can withdraw consent at any time without affecting the service.
  • Legitimate interest — we keep short security logs and aggregated funnel statistics to run a safe and improving service. You can object — see “Your rights” below.
  • Legal obligation — completed-transaction and broker-vetting records are kept for 7 years to satisfy commercial and (where applicable) anti-money-laundering requirements.

Who we share your data with

  • The brokers you select. Only after you tick the sharing consent box on the matches page. We send them your name, email, the boat basics you entered, and your location. We never share your data with a broker you did not pick.
  • Service providers we use to run the site: Vercel (hosting), Neon (Postgres database), Resend (transactional email), Posthog (analytics, EU region), Sentry (error tracking), Mapbox (marina map display), and Stripe (for broker invoicing only — no payment data ever flows through here from sellers).
  • Authorities — only where we are legally required to disclose, and we will tell you unless the law forbids it.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share your data with brokers you didn’t choose, with advertising networks, or with data brokers.

International transfers

Our primary hosting is in the EU. Some providers (notably Stripe, Sentry, Mapbox) process data in the United States. Where personal data leaves the EEA we rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and, where available, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Data retention

  • Anonymous funnel sessions (no email submitted) — purged after 90 days.
  • Active seller accounts and their boat inquiries — kept while your account is open. Deleted within 30 days of an account-closure request, except for records we are legally required to retain.
  • Completed-transaction records (broker side) — retained for 7 years.
  • Broker vetting documents (membership letters, ID, bank-account confirmations) — retained for 7 years with admin-only access.
  • Server access logs — 30 days.

Your rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)

You can:

  • access the personal data we hold about you,
  • have it corrected or erased,
  • port it out in a machine-readable format,
  • object to processing based on legitimate interest, and
  • withdraw any consent you previously gave (e.g. analytics, marketing, broker sharing).

Signed-in sellers can export their data at /account/data-export and request deletion from /account. For anything else, email privacy@brokercompare.example. We respond within 30 days. You can complain to your local data protection authority — in the UK, the ICO.

Cookies

We use a small set of essential cookies (session, locale, consent-state) and, only with your consent, analytics cookies via Posthog. See our cookie policy for the full list.

Children

BrokerCompare is not aimed at children under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal data, email us and we will delete it.

We may update this policy. Material changes are highlighted on the homepage and emailed to signed-in users.
